If you live in the state of Florida, Laurie can provide Medical Nutritional Therapy, also known as MNT.
This means your doctor may recommend you work with a registered dietitian to help control your diabetes, blood pressure, high cholesterol, weight, digestive issues, or kidney disease.
All you need is a prescription from your physician providing the type of diet he or she is recommending for you.
Dietitans cannot determine the diet you should follow without a complete health history from your physician. This includes your diagnoses, medical history, laboratory test results, current medications (prescription as well as over-the-counter), current height and weight, and weight history.
If you are having difficulty controlling diabetes, Laurie may also recommend you work with a local RN, Colleen Symanski, who is a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE).
Where do we meet?
Normally I prefer to visit you in your home in order to better assess your usual diet. In your house we can see how your kitchen is set up, where you dine, what sized dishes and utensils you use, and if you have easy access to measuring cups and spoons.
We can survey your pantry and refrigerator and take specific note of foods, ingredients, nutrition facts panels, and content of what and how you typically eat.
How Often will we meet?
Early on, essential monitoring may be preferable. Weekly visits are 45 minutes long and we review how the past week has gone, what's worked and what isn't working well. It's important to find your motivation now to make those small but difficult lifestyle changes. We will tweak the plan until you feel comfortable with it, and your healthy eating and activity schedule becomes routine. ($300 monthly)
Got a handle on how well you're doing? You might opt for the custom package that includes bi-weekly visits and attentive monitoring. You are comfortably developing a routine, but still find certain times of day difficult to manage or can't keep your exercise routine consistently on target. ($340 for 2 months)
After you've made good habit changes, things will become easier. You'll have a good idea of how to plan, shop for and prepare meals; you'll have a regular activity level built into your day, and your physician will be happy with your weight loss progress, better laboratory test results, and lower blood pressure readings! Things are going pretty well for you, but you still have occasional slip-ups and road blocks, such as vacations, holidays, company from out of town, or life stressors that throw you off balance. We'll meet periodically for assisted monitoring when you need a bit more support getting back on track. Sometimes a 30-minute phone call will provide just the energy you need to re-focus and re-energize. ($300 for 5 telephone or skype visits, recommended every 3-4 weeks)
